John Sisk & Son + Reddy Architecture & Urbanism
Born from a dynamic collaboration between Reddy Architecture + Urbanism, HOK and the esteemed John Sisk & Son Construction — supported by a skilled network of specialist contractors and consultants — the new Bon Secours Hospital Limerick rises at Ballysimon, Limerick as a landmark moment in Irish healthcare.
Spanning 23,050 square metres, this striking, state-of-the-art facility houses 96 inpatient beds and is designed to care for up to 50,000 patients each year. As the first new acute hospital delivered in Ireland in almost 20 years, it signals a new chapter in the nation’s healthcare story — one defined by innovation, resilience and ambition.
Within its carefully considered walls, advanced cardiology, oncology and neurology services sit alongside world-class surgical care. Yet this hospital is more than a centre for treatment. It represents a progressive model for contemporary healthcare design — where clinical precision meets environmental stewardship and where light, space and materiality are orchestrated to promote dignity, recovery and wellbeing.
The architectural identity of Bon Secours Hospital Limerick is defined by a graceful sweeping curve, giving the building a striking and memorable silhouette on the Ballysimon skyline. The upper two storeys of the inpatient block are wrapped in glazed terracotta vertical tiles and fins, carefully composed to filter and soften the low morning sun while adding depth and rhythm to the façade.
At ground and first-floor level, transparency takes centre stage. A fully glazed frontage encloses the welcoming main concourse alongside outpatient, day-case and inpatient facilities, allowing natural light to flood shared spaces and creating an immediate sense of openness. Above, the second and third floors cantilever outward to form a generous canopy over the entrance, sheltering a pedestrian walkway that connects seamlessly to nearby public transport points.
Recently nominated by the Irish Construction Excellence Awards as 2026 Finalists in the Architectural Design Excellence category – (Project value Over €20m).
These upper levels house inpatient wards designed to capture expansive views across the surrounding landscape. Abundant daylight and natural ventilation enhance patient comfort and recovery, with passive ventilation strategies integrated throughout non-clinical areas of the hospital. This approach reinforces the interior concept: access to landscape, light and comfort fosters wellbeing and encourages a more collaborative, human-centred model of care.
To the rear of the site, a second block accommodates diagnostic, treatment and surgical suites. Carefully planned adjacencies ensure direct, efficient and discreet connections to the departments they support. Meanwhile, the hospital restaurant opens onto landscaped gardens with views towards the on-site chapel, strengthening the connection between inside and out. A dedicated patient roof garden, accessible directly from inpatient wards, further embeds the building within its leafy surroundings and offers a restorative outdoor retreat.
As visitors enter the main concourse, they are guided intuitively through a seamless sequence of spaces. The design prioritises clarity, calm and comfort — enhancing the patient experience and reducing stress. Hospitality-inspired interiors contribute to a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels both reassuring and refined.
